DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: The Rehabilitation Medicine Department
provides a complete range of physical, occupational and
speech/language therapies. Each therapeutic service has a common,

At each visit, a licensed physical or occupational therapist (PT or
OT) provides ongoing assessment and education services for
Physical therapists at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham focus
on the treatment of orthopedic and sports-related injuries.
Occupational therapists at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham
are certified hand therapists or are certified eligible,
specializing in the treatment of problems related to the hand,
wrist and elbow.
*We work collaboratively with referring physicians to provide
excellent/appropriate plan of care.
*Speech services are primarily inpatient-based.
*Outpatient swallowing studies via video fluroscopy are available
and arranged in consultation with Radiology.

*Back & neck pain
*Shoulder injuries Rotator cuff, tendonitis, bursitis, frozen
*Knee issues arthritis, ligament strains, meniscal tears
*Ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis
*Balance & walking issues
Injuries and illnesses treated through Occupational Therapy (OT)
*Carpal tunnel syndrome
*Post-injury and post-surgical care
*Fractures and sprains
*Custom designed and hand-made splints
JOB LOCATION: Needham, MA

JOB SUMMARY: Organizes and conducts an Occupational Therapy program
upon referral from a physician to facilitate rehabilitation of the
physically handicapped or injured person with a focus on Upper
Extremity/Hand. Educates patients, families, students and the
community in the Occupational Therapy practice. Participates as a
team member in the day to day operations of the department.
* Evaluates patients, establishes goals and implements treatment
program per department's procedures and standards of care in a
supportive and caring environment.
* Appropriately assesses and manages pain in accordance with the

* Instructs patients and families in Occupational therapy
procedures as part of a patient's on going program as needed.
* Adequately plans for patient's discharge involving other
pertinent team members, when appropriate.
* Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy required.
* License Occupational Therapist License required.
* 0-1 years related work experience required in Occupational
Therapy, with specialization in Hand Therapy for at least one
* Experience with computer systems required, including web based
applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may
include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
* Certification in Hand Therapy

May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate
complexity and importance.
* Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied,
requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct
observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.

procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general

Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to

PHYSICAL NATURE OF THE JOB:
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or
50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and
requires extended periods of standing and/or moving.
