Department: Fine and Performing Arts Job Title: Visual Art Teacher - Middle FLSA Status:

Summary:

This position provides an opportunity for an energetic and highly organized teacher of visual art to teach a comprehensive array of visual art methods & materials and elements & principals of design. Emphasis will be placed on teaching 2D/3D studio skills and craft as well as visual art literacy, history, and media arts.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 3-years' experience teaching middle school visual art
  • Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer/media arts experience (including iPads)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent portfolio of individual and student artwork
  • Experience with Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS)
  • Experience with kiln operation with automated kiln sitter
  • Maintains artistic endeavors and art making in any medium
  • Broad knowledge of visual art history
  • Teaching skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics
  • Experience collaborating with fine arts and academic colleagues
  • Experience exhibiting student artwork

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (Not Limited To):

The candidate appointed to this position will

  • Work in collaboration with building colleagues and citywide visual art teachers to maintain citywide visual art curriculum and assessment practices
  • Maintain student art exhibits in designated areas throughout the school and at the Newton Education Center
  • Assist students with artworks submitted to adjudicated competitions (e.g. Scholastic Art, MAEA, other)
  • Consistent, reliable and punctual attendance is essential for supervision and instruction of the students
  • Responsible for implementing "other job related duties" as needed.

Work Environment:

Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate. Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. Rarely absent or late unless the situation is of an emergency nature.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel. The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.
