Mechanical Designer

Status: Exempt (salaried)

Position Summary

The Mechanical Designer will support the design and development of components and system packaging to meet functional, certification and cost requirements. This position requires strength in the areas of Computer-Aided Design (CAD), hands-on testing and team-work. The Designer role requires close interaction with the other engineering team members ensuring efforts are efficiently coordinated. The role also requires collaboration with the supply chain, quality, manufacturing and service teams to ensure designs meet cross-functional requirements. The ideal candidate should be creative, self-motivated, able to handle multiple project assignments and willing to learn and adapt within a fast-paced engineering organization.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain knowledge regarding Plug Power technology including current design specifications and constraints
  • Work to create new system designs and/or modify existing system designs with a focus upon lower cost, improved manufacturability, increased product performance, and higher overall product quality
  • Work with mechanical, systems, chemical and electrical engineering teams to define integration requirements for a wide variety of fuel cell system components
  • Use PTC Creo to create accurate, complete and concise engineering documentation from large system assembly models and detailed part drawings
  • Coordinate design changes with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Create detailed drawings to ASME 14.5M-2009 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing specifications
  • Troubleshoot design failures and identify solutions to improve product design
  • Lead design changes through the enterprise change process
  • Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions; support the philosophy of the organization to provide high-performing technology to maximize customer satisfaction
  • Perform all other duties as assigned and required within role

Education and Experience

  • Associates degree in engineering or other relevant technical field of study
  • 3+ years of related work history preferably within a technology product manufacturing environment
  • Highly experienced with 3D CAD software; PTC Creo Parametric strongly preferred
  • Experience with a structured Engineering Change Process; PTC Windchill is highly preferred
  • Working knowledge of sheet metal structures and enclosures is a plus
  • Experience with molded plastic and cast parts for volume production is looked for
  • Experience with automotive applications and/or electric powertrains is desirable
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Teamwork oriented and focused
  • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively
  • Dynamic interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences and stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities with strong attention to detail
  • Exceptional task-oriented follow-through
  • Must possess the highest ethical standards and a commitment to work quality
  • Must be driven and self-motivated
